Thomas L. Matthews, M.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Matthews graduated from Austin College with a degree in Biology, and went on to attend medical school at UTHSCSA, graduating there in 1997. He then completed General Psychiatry Residency as well as a Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Residency from UTHSCSA in 2002. In 2002 he joined the faculty in the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. He is board certified in both General and Child &Adolescent Psychiatry.

Dr. Matthews currently serves as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the School of Medicine. In this capacity he works in managing student related issues, managing the medical student career advising system, and directs clerkship scheduling.

He also serves as Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Associate Residency Training Director. Previously he was the Residency Training Director from 2004 until 2012. In this capacity he helps manage the clinical and educational experiences of the child and adolescent psychiatry residents, and works to keep up the accreditation of the program. Dr. Matthews also teaches residents/fellows, from interns to fifth year residents, and provides didactic and clinical teaching as well as psychotherapy and career supervision for them. Teaching medical students is also a key role that Dr. Matthews plays. He teaches first through fourth year medical students.
