Matthew Jeffreys, MD graduated from the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1985 and completed his residency in Adult Psychiatry at the Medical School in 1989. Dr. Jeffreys was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society in 1985 and was accepted as a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2008 and elevated to Distinguished Fellow in 2014. He is currently a Professor/Clinical in the Department of Psychiatry and served as Medical Director for the Posttraumatic Stress Disorders Clinical Team (PCT) at the South Texas Veteran?s Health Care System (STVHCS) from 1995-2013. In August 2013, he began a new position developing telepsychiatry services for the VA?s Valley Coastal Bend System (VCB). Primary areas of service responsibility have include clinical care, administration, and development of initiatives aimed at delivering evidence based, interdisciplinary treatment interventions to our nation?s veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He collaborates with other PTSD treatment sites at the local, regional, and national levels. Beginning in April 2008, Dr. Jeffreys was selected to serve as a mentor for the VA Integrated Services Network 17 (VISN 17), a VA National Mentoring Program for PTSD providers sponsored through the National Center for PTSD (NCPTSD). This select group of national mentors provides clinical, educational, and administrative support to other PTSD programs throughout the United States. From October 2010 through October 2011, Dr. Jeffreys worked half time for the national PTSD Consultation Program for the NCPTSD. This program offers consultation to any VA provider treating a patient with PTSD within the national VA system. Other work through the NCPTSD has included serving as a member of the PTSD polypharmacy advisory group and the CME development committee. He served as a member of the working group revising the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines for PTSD published in 2010 and 2017. Service through teaching has included directing the Anxiety Disorders Seminar for PG II psychiatry residents, supervising PGIII and PGIV psychiatry residents, teaching psychology interns, and teaching and supervising medical students. Scholarship has included local, national, and international presentations related to PTSD and research published in peer reviewed journals. Current projects and future goals include developing a system for delivering evidence based practice through telemedicine to remote areas of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Jeffreys provides expertise in PTSD, telepsychiatry, and mentoring for the Department of Psychiatry at UTHSCSA. He is furthering the department?s missions of clinical excellence, scholarship, evidence based treatment, and providing psychiatric services to underserved populations. |
