De De has been a respiratory therapist for 25 years and in respiratory therapy education for 19 years. She is the Chair of the Department of Repiratory Care and The Steven Lloyd Barshop Endowed Chair at the Univeristy of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Utilizing cases and scenarios, simulation (medium and low fedility) and incorporating technology into teaching are her strengths in teaching. She has authored a book chapter, her thesis and a few articles on blended learning and teaching. De De is respiratory therapist in the South Texas ALS Clinic working with ALS patients. She has research grant evaluating two airway clearance devices and determining the best airway clearance for the ALS patient. She is also either a primary investigator or co investigagor on two grants associated with asthma education. One is related to asthma education for health care providers and the other is responsible for providing asthma education to 5 elementary schools in San Antonio. De De is extremely active in a variety of leadership positions in a number of professional organizations such as the American College of Chest Physicians, Commision on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, and the Coalition for Baccalaureate and Graduate Respiratory Therapy Education. |

Aerosol Device Education- Many respiratory patients are prescribed numerous medication delivery devices to manage either chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. These devices are confusing to use. The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the Department of Respiratory Care collaborated on a project to develop patient handouts that showed a patient or practioner how to use each medication delivery device. The ACCP awarded Jay Peters, MD and I a grant of $3500 to use to educate primary care physicians and their staff to obtain these handouts and provide them to their patients. These handsouts are housed on the American College of Chest Physician''s website and used Internationally for patient education. |
Blackboard Online Education- First in the department to adopt WebCT and Blackboard for online courses. I have developed all 5 clinical courses, Respiratory Care Pharmacology, Advanced Life Support and Airways course, and Disease Management and Rehabilitation courses for WebCT/Blackboard. Became a certified teacher for Blackboard and have published a chapter in a book entitled "Blended Learning" and the use of online/distance education. As the Department "go to person" I have provided over 100 hours of departmental staff development for creating or modifying courses offered using the Blackboard system and provide a Blackboard orientation to the students each year. |

| Status | Active |
| Period | 7/2012 - 6/2014 |
| Role | Co-Investigator |
| Grant Detail | The purpose of this project is to create/evaluate a multidisciplinary Web-based Interactive Professional Education in Asthma (WipeAsthma) program using our extensive experience with developing live interactive asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) courses and a Web-based Interactive Professional Education in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (WipeCOPD) program that is currently under final revisions and reviews at the following private link: http://208.116.52.144/. Based on the data summarized in our needs assessment in asthma, the overall learning objectives of WIPEAsthma include: 1. Correctly diagnose and assess patients with persistent asthma 2. Translate best practice recommendations for asthma into clinical practice 3. Apply best practice recommendations for asthma in clinical scenarios In creating and assessing this multidisciplinary web-based interactive professional education in asthma program (WIPEAsthma), we will address many of the limitations of other educational offerings and start to create a continuing professional development program as suggested by the Institute of Medicine. Our on-line course is a method to disseminate evidence-based guidelines in an interactive format with practical examples of how the guidelines can be applied to clinical practice. In addition, the web technology will be able to reach a large audience, allow clinicians to learn at their own pace as they have available time, will be available for a refresher of important information as clinicians encounter patients with particular problems with asthma care, and will provide real-time feedback to learners by comparing them to their peers. By assessing the actual impact of this web-based educational activity designed to disseminate best practices in asthma care according to the evidence-based guidelines into clinical practice of healthcare professionals, our understanding of the complexities of changing clinician behavior will be advanced.
