My early career in dental hygiene consisted of nearly 30 years of clinical practice in Idaho and Texas. The experiences of working in a periodontal office coupled with continuing my formal education provided an opportunity to become an educator, I have served dental hygiene in almost all capacities from clinical faculty to tenured Associate Professor. I am currently directing the on-line BS degree completion and Master programs, however I have served as Acting Director for the Division of Dental Hygiene in the Department of Periodontics for a period of 9 months from 9-2012 to 7-2013. The DH Division includes three (3) programs BS entry, BS degree completion, and Master degree programs. As director of the on-line programs, I am responsible for marketing, admissions, advising and mentoring students, reviewing the curriculum, and certifying students for graduation.
In 2005, I was challenged with directing the BS degree completion program within our department, three years later the directing the Master program was added to my responsibilities. The goal of combining the responsibility was to increase marketing and enrollment. Realizing the low numbers of graduates and in an effort to comply with the Texas Coordinating Boards goal to close the gaps I submitted a proposal to move the completion and master program from the traditionally face-to-face classes to an on-line delivery, the change was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in the spring of 2009. Currently these programs are among the few on-line programs offered at UT Health Science Center at SA.
My passion is for providing the best teaching in all levels of the dental hygiene program. I have been fortunate to be part of building our divisions national reputation of presenting annual clinical educational workshops to dental hygiene faculty across the US and Canada. The annual workshops began in 2000, and have gained a national reputation for providing excellent professional development for dental hygiene educators. My contribution to the workshops began in 2004 with an annual clinical faculty calibration pre-workshop hosted at the University.
