Coordination of Fluoride exposure studies -
a) Instruct parents on urine collection procedures and essential data required.
b) Supervise urine sample collection of children and subsequent required procedures, including sample preservation and data recording to ensure completeness prior to transferring to laboratory for further analysis.
c) Assist on determination of concentration of fluoride in urine
d) Assist on administration of questionnaires on fluoride. exposure and oral hygiene habits to parents of participating children.
e) Data entry into electronic format and safe keeping of records. |
Interpreter and translator -
Interpreter for Spanish speaking patients attending the dental school clinic and for individuals from Spanish speaking countries visiting the Health Science Center campus. In addition, translate documents from English to Spanish for use in research projects and for recording patient information in the dental clinic. |
Nutrition and Diabetes Prevention -
Collaboration on nutrition and diabetes prevention education research for comparing educational methods, traditional versus via tele-medicine, to a high risk Hispanic population in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
Develop educational material targeting Hispanic/Latinos who have diabetes or are at high risk of developing the disease on how to maintain good oral care as related to diabetes. |
Organization of studies addressing oral health -
Surveys and research studies to study factors associated with occurrence, severity and prevention of dental diseases affecting children and elderly.
a) Organizational and coordination skills for development of epidemiological surveys or research projects aiming to obtain information or study factors associated with dental diseases.
b) Liaison with education institution or agency for arranging participation on the study and to maintain collaboration during project development.
c) Interaction with parents, children and adults on recruitment procedures and provide information on research objectives, value of research and practical application of results to the community at large. And, on studies involving children, discuss with parents importance of children participation during the duration of the project to minimize drop out rates.
d) Preparation and development of necessary documents, consent forms, culturally sensitive instructional and educational material, and translation into Spanish language.
e) Assistance on acquisition and maintenance of supplies, equipment and instruments necessary to achieve the objectives of the study.
f) Assist on data collection and safe keeping of study records. |
Studies addressing oral health of Hispanics -
Collaborate on planning, development and implementation of studies focusing on oral health of Hispanics and relationship of cultural factors on access to health care. Development of culturally competent questionnaires in Spanish language and other culturally sensitive materials for use in the studies. |

| Co-Course Director - NOTE: This course initiated with DSII through 2005. In 2005 the course was transferred to DS I.
Develop instructional materials for the clinical and laboratory components of this course. In the lecture part of the course, I instruct students on scientific basis of this preventive procedure, evolution of and current products available, required instrumentation and correct use, and sequence of procedures for success sealant application. I recruit clinical faculty to supervise and provide other instructions required by the course.
In the laboratory component, I am responsible for assigning small groups of students to each faculty member, securing laboratory space and ensuring that all necessary elements and instruments are available for this practicum. I verify student completion of required assignments and confer with students as needed.
After these activities have been accomplished, I instruct and guide students in the placement of pit and fissure sealant materials prior to the clinical encounter with the patient.

| Course Director - Teach Freshman Dental Students prevention strategies and techniques conducive to improvement and maintenance of oral health. Students participate in a public health preventive program conducted in an elementary school located in a disadvantaged neighborhood in the city of San Antonio. Dental students provide instruction to small groups of elementary school children on tooth brushing and which is complemented with nutrition information concerning healthy teeth. Approximately 630 elementary school children participate annually in this program. Approximately 99 dental students per year. |
