As a public health dentist my expertise is in providing dental students real world experiences in the delivery of dental care to special populations developed from my own personal experience as dental director of a Federally Qualified Community Health Center and a teaching position in the Department of Community Dentistry. For over twenty eight years I have acted as course director and clinical faculty in the supervision of fourth year dental students for a school-based migrant farm worker children`s mobile dental van program in the San Antonio Independent School District. In another capacity ,I act as director of a short term mission trip selective, where students are exposed to the utilization of portable equipment in the delivery of primary dental care to " colonia" residents along the U.S./Mexico border.
Three years ago we were asked to develop an exciting new program, a fourth year dental student`s rotation in treating homeless population at San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic ( SACDC) at Haven for Hope( HFH) in San Antonio. Haven For Hope is the largest "Transformation" campus in the U.S. . In this capacity as director and dental educator, dental students receive instructions in the management of special populations of homelessness with history of drug and alcohol addiction, post traumatic stress disorder, sexual and physical abuse, prostitution, mental health challenges and displaced families with children. As director , my position at 60% has allowed me to recruit and engage other UTHSCSA-DS faculty group leaders with a heart for this kind of teaching environment. Dental student`s positive experience and satisfaction is related through feedback from required reflection papers. Assigned by our Dean, Dr. Bill Dodge,to serve as point person at SACDC at Haven for Hope`s Transformation Campus, has allowed the facilitation of developing other programs. We have expanded care of the homeless by adding the presence of Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents and dental hygiene students joining the pre-doctorate program. My role and contribution in the administration aspect for each of these programs has served to assist in course development and contributes to grant outcome data collection for funding of programs for their continuation and expansion.
In another area of service expertise, my history with international missions has allowed me recognition as a conference speaker. In this capacity I utilized my experience in the foreign mission field to teach pre-dental , dental students as well as dental residents. I have served the dental school by planning ,coordinating and accompanying dental students and residents with trips into Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico and most recently Honduras.
