A Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and an associate clinical professor in the department of orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He received his B.A. degree from Harpur College, State University of New York in 1959, his D.D.S. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dentistry in 1963 and completed his graduate training in orthodontics at the University of Missouri ? Kansas City in 1970 receiving a Master of Science degree.

Dr. Hammer is a retired United States Army Reserve Officer, holding the rank of Colonel. He has received numerous military awards including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Medical Badge, and the prestigious U.S. Army Award of Medical Merit. He is a past president of the Hawaii Dental Association and the Hawaii Society of Orthodontics. Dr. Hammer holds fellowships in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Academy of Dentistry International.

After serving in the military, Dr. Hammer established a private practice in orthodontics in Hawaii covering the period 1974 to 2000. On his retirement from private practice, Dr. Hammer and his family moved to San Antonio where he joined the faculty of the UTHSCSA dental school. His hobbies include singing baritone with various quartets and choruses in the Barbershop Harmony Society. He also is a world renowned collector of miniature model cars. He has been collecting since 1968 and specializes in the Porsche marque.
