I received my BA in Biology at the University of Kansas in 1970, and my Doctor of Dental Surgery (With Distinction) at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry in 1973. I completed a two-year residency in General Dentistry at the Veteran?s Administration Hospital in Waco, Texas in 1976. I received my certificate in Periodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1980. I began my dental school teaching career during my residency in Periodontics after which I joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio faculty and taught surgical and non-surgical Periodontics in the predoctoral division. In 1988, I became the Course Director for the DS III Periodontics lecture course and continued that responsibility until 2011. Also in 1988, I became Course Director of the DS III periodontics clinic course and I continued that responsibility until 2003 when a curriculum reorganization took effect merging that course into General Dentistry. In 2009, I became the director of the predoctoral division of the Department of Periodontics with oversight of all 5 Periodontics courses. In
2009-10, I was the Course Director for four of those courses. I have particular interests in curriculum development and organization, clinical and classroom teaching and development of novel teaching methods. I have participated in research activities since early in my career at the Health Science Center using both human clinical and animal model study designs. My time commitment to research has increased in the last few years as I have expanded my interests in dental implants and Periodontal regenerative surgical procedures. My service activities have been related to education, curriculum development and continuing education.
