Dr. Thomas Oates is the Assistant Dean for Clinical Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School and Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Oates received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania and received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. His research efforts include clinical and animal studies in implantology, peri-implantitis, and clinical investigations of the associations between oral and systemic health, with a current focus on diabetes mellitus. Dr. Oates is Director of the Southwest Region of the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network and also serves as the Co-Director of the South Texas Oral Health Network (STOHN), a newly emerging practice-based research network with investigations on-going in tobacco cessation, oral health literacy, diabetes, and bisphosphonate therapy.
