Bjorn Steffensen is an Associate Dean for Research in the Dental School and a Professor in the Department of Periodontics and the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas. He received his dental degree from the Royal Dental College of Copenhagen, Denmark in 1978. Subsequently, he taught part-time at the Royal Dental College and practiced dentistry first in Denmark and then in Switzerland where he also attended postdoctoral courses in the Departments of Periodontics and Crown and Bridge Dentistry at The University of Berne. During 1983-1986, Dr. Steffensen completed specialty training as a periodontist and completed his M.S. degree from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. From 1992-1997, he attended graduate studies and received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver BC, Canada. Dr. Steffensen has held his faculty position at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Department of Periodontics, from 1986‑1992 and from 1997 to present. He is a Diplomate of the
American Board of Periodontology and licensed to practice dentistry in Texas. Currently, Dr. Steffensen is teaching dental students and postdoctoral residents topics ranging from basic biology to clinical periodontology. He also heads an active research program focusing on the biology of the extracellular matrix in health and disease.
