I currently hold the position of Professor/Clinical (non-tenure track) in the Department of Orthopaedics with a joint appointment in the Division of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery. I am fellowship trained and board-certified in plastic surgery with special qualifications in surgery of the hand by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

I feel that I have significant achievements in the three core areas considered for promotion. In the area of research I am actively engaged in several research projects in the Department of Medicine evaluating fat metabolism in the role of glucose processing in individuals with diabetes mellitus. This has resulted in several recent basic science publications cited in my curriculum vitae. These basic science research projects are ongoing and I anticipate further scientific publications.

Teaching is the second core area where I feel I have made positive contributions to the local medical community and UTHSCSA. As a joint appointed faculty member, I have the privilege to be involved in the clinical education of the second year plastic surgery residents as well as the interns in the Department of Orthopaedics. This requires daily preparation in order to maximize the learning opportunities that are presented daily in the operating room and in the clinic setting. As noted in my curriculum vitae I have been selected as teacher of the year four times by the residents within the division of plastic surgery. My teaching as an ATLS instructor has led to my selection not only as a course director for the student course but also has course director for the instructor candidate course. My success in this endeavor has led to my recent selection as a state faculty member within the ATLS teaching hierarchy. Service is my strongest of the three areas considered by the University for promotion. My position within the Department of Orthopaedics focuses predominantly on soft tissue reconstruction for patient within the orthopaedic and general surgery trauma services. This requires a well-rounded background in reconstructive and plastic surgery with the ability to perform procedures ranging from a simple skin graft to complex microvascular free tissue transfer. I have been extremely successful in my efforts since my appointment to the Department of Orthopaedics in 2005. In addition as a member of the hand service within the department I take night call and function as one of two board-certified hand surgeons within the department. My busy clinical practice has allowed me to rank third or fourth in measured production within our large department of over 30 clinicians for the past four years.

Currently I collaborate with Dr. Bartanusz in the Department of Neurosurgery in an effort to provide comprehensive care to patients with brachial plexus injury. This collaboration has been ongoing for over four years. Recently my collaboration with Dr. Lillian Liao, Director of Pediatric Trauma has increased as we have collaborated on difficult burn cases and secondary trauma reconstruction. I have collaborated with the Childrens Hospital San Antonio for the last four years in their Pediatric Orthopaedic clinic providing the sole congenital hand clinic in San Antonio in the South Texas region.

My involvement with ATLS is predominantly with the Defense Medical Readiness and Training Institute located at Fort Sam Houston. I have taught or chaired as many as 5 to 7 courses per year. My other military involvement represents service to my community and our country. I am currently the state air surgeon for the New York Air National Guard. I am the senior medical advisor to state leadership within the New York military structure and to the governor of New York. I provide medical oversight to the six ANG wings and over 6000 individuals within the NYANG. Further explanation of my responsibilities is explained in detail within my curriculum vitae.

I have been very fortunate to achieve success within both my career in medicine and my career in the military. I feel my past achievements represent my potential for
