Dr. Currie is Professor with Tenure in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the UTHSCSA. He was brought to San Antonio 30 years ago by Dr. Arthur Grant, the founding professor of the department, to begin a program in Pediatric Rehabilitation, and is still the head of that program. He has received the UTHSCSA Presidential Awards in both teaching and clinical experience. He helped develop a closer integration between basic science instruction and clinical exposure in the first two years of the medical school curriculum and served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee when the new curriculum was being implemented. His membership in scientific organizations and publications are listed in the body of the curriculum vitae. |

Curriculum development and teaching methods- Determining what all medical students in the United States and Canada must know about rehabilitative care, and teaching them rehabilitative care throughout the curriculum (this is an LCME requirement for all medical schools). Teaching residents and students to become life-long learners, including use of information technolgy to enhance patient care (this includes evidence-based medicine). Optimal teaching-learning methodologies, including students teaching other students, hands-on demonstrations of therapy methodolgies and modalities to medical students by allied health professionals, and developing web-based curriculum for medical students in PM&R and rehabilitative care. Evaluation of innovative teaching methodologies, including qualitative research techniques to evaluate learning. |
Pediatric Rehabilitation- Pediatric disabling conditions, especially pediatric neurologic disabilities, neurogenic bowel dysfunction in children, and pedatric oncologic disabling conditions. |
Rehabilitation Technology- Seating and mobility aids for catastrophically disabled children and adults. High technology for catastrophically disabled children and adults, including innovative matching of patients to available rehabilitation technology, and training in the use of rehabilitation technology. |
