Protein biochemistry in the retina -
My research deals with the biochemistry and cell biology of neuronal growth in the retina. It utilizes standard biochemical techniques to study the function of various proteins that participate in the mechanism of nerve growth. A retinal ganglion cell line (RGC-5), retinal explants, and primary cultures of retinal ganglion cells are used to study how the cells might be induced to regenerate following damage. Similar damage ocurs in glaucoma and causes retinal ganglion cell death and blindness. |
