My research interests are in the areas of laser bioeffects and medical applications; photosensitized free-radical reactions in the eye; light damage and repair mechanisms in the eye; retinal information processing, photodynamic therapy, optical tissue diagnostic spectroscopy, ocular pharmacology (especially mechanisms of drug penetration into the eye). Current projects include: an investigation of the function of histaminergic retinopetal fibers, and the development of a laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopic method for detection of infectious agents.

Review course covering general principals of radiation biology, including the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. This is a required course for all graduate students in the Radiological Sciences degree programs. The curriculum for this course has recently been revised, and the module on laser-tissue interaction and laser medical applications, which I teach, is newly included for the 2009 academic year.

Title	Rapid identification of pathogenic agents in biological samples using pulsed laser optoacoustic spectroscopy with targeted nanoparticle contrast agents

Grant Detail	To develop a rapid screening method for blood-borne pathogens. Pathogens will be detected directly, by recognition of their surface antigens with specific antibodies coupled to metal nanoparticles, in a novel, optical-based, immunoaffinity reaction protocol. The nanoparticles have very high optical contrast, enabling the detection of immunocomplexes in the samples to be detected with high sensitivity and specificity using laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy.

Grant Detail	The purpose of the proposed research is to test and compare two different, yet possibly complementary methods for improving the penetration and specificity of ophthalmic drugs. The specific tissue target for these drugs will be neovascular membranes associated with age related macular degeneration.
