The overall purpose of my program of research is to promote mental health recovery and reduce disparities experienced by individuals living with serious mental illness. Guided by social justice principles, I use qualitative research methodologies to gain insight into factors central to mental health recovery for women with overlapping experiences of trauma, homelessness, and serious mental illness. In addition, I use Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methods to partner with community members, mental health advocates, and other stakeholders on issues they feel meaningful and relevant to mental health recovery. Completed research projects include a funded project with the founders of a recovery-oriented community-based organization made up of people with psychiatric disorders to evaluate the effectiveness of their recovery-oriented program. In another funded research project, I partnered with residents of a homeless shelter on issues related to medication safety and dispensing within the shelter. Currently, I am a member of an interprofessional research team conducting funded projects related to substance use among pregnant and parenting mothers and maternal opioid overdose deaths.
