After receiving his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the N.D.R.I./Kurukshetra University, India in 1982, Dr. Tekmal completed postdoctoral training in molecular biology at Michigan State University and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He started his independent academic research career at Oakland University in Michigan and in 1989, joined the ob-gyn faculty at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio for the first time. After six years, Dr. Tekmal moved to Emory University in Atlanta, where he achieved the rank of professor (tenured) and led the Breast Cancer Research Program at Emory?s Winship Cancer Research Institute. In 2003, the UT Health Science?s Ob-Gyn department recruited Dr. Tekmal to return to San Antonio to start a Division of Reproductive Research.
At the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dr. Tekmal is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and holds the Carl J. Pauerstein Professorship in Reproductive Research. As Director of the Division of Reproductive Research, he oversees the department?s basic and translational research. Dr. Tekmal?s active faculty life includes service on numerous committees including the Faculty Senate and the senate?s executive committee. At the UT Health Science Center?s Cancer Therapy and Research Center, Dr. Tekmal is Theme Leader of the Women?s Cancer Program.
As a Full Professor with tenure at UTHSCSA, I have continued to maintain sustained excellence performance all three essential areas. I have continued carryout funded and am actively pursuing additional funding. I have been highly productive in publishing findings from my research activities both in peer reviewed journals and as published invited articles. My research focus is well diversified and is consistent with the departmental objectives. I was invited speaker at both national meetings and international meetings. Also, I was invited to speak at both national and international institutions. In addition, research findings from my group were presented at a number of national and international meetings at which members of my research group (Fellows/students) have received awards.
I am actively involved in both formal and supervisory/mentor teaching as well as training graduate (Ph.D., and MS students) and clinical fellows, medical residents through formal and individual teaching and mentored research projects/thesis. I am also actively involved in mentoring both high school and undergraduate students in their science projects. Many of my students have won competitions at local, regional, national and international levels.
In addition to serving on national and university peer review committees as well as on editorial boards, I am also involved in serving several university standing committees that requires substantial time/effort commitment throughout academic year (IACUC, IRB, PTAC, Faculty Senate) and other University committees. I am not only actively participated in various committees at departmental/school/university and system wide committees; I have also held leadership positions in some these activities.
Dr. Tekmal is also very actively involved in various community activities at both local and national level.
