UTHSCSA Faculty Profiles v1.0

Gonzales, Cara B

Dental School
Comprehensive Dentistry

I am a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry where I perform translational research in the field of oral cancer. My research focus is two-fold: 1) characterization of novel mechanisms of oral cancer pain; and 2) drug development to treat oral cancer and cancer related pain. In this regard, I have demonstrated that tumor secreted molecules activate pain receptors in the trigeminal system and have identified novel compounds that we are currently testing, in vitro and in vivo, for the ability to halt tumor progression and alleviate the tumor related pain. In addition to my research, I practice as a general dentist in the Faculty Practice Clinic. I also assist with screening potential patients for the dental school and overseeing students in the clinic. My teaching duties allow me to work closely with the students in the classroom, the clinic, and the laboratory. My hope is that I can pass on the passion for translational research to the next generation.
