Dr. Sanchez-Reilly is an associate professor, board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice/Palliative Medicine. Dr. Sanchez-Reilly is the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program Director at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Sanchez-Reilly has earned a national reputation in Palliative Care Education and End-of-Life Communication Research. Dr. Sanchez-Reilly actively participates in national societies such as the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), the American Geriatrics Society (AGS)(Ethics Committee Member) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) supported group that developed the competencies and assessment tools for all Palliative Medicine Fellowships. Dr. Sanchez-Reilly received a Geriatric Academic Career Award (GACA) from the Department of Health and Human Services through which she established a Palliative Care Consultation Program for older adults. Moreover, Dr. Sanchez-Reilly is a member of the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee and has been on the task force to reform the Curriculum. Dr. Sanchez-Reilly is the Director of the NIA-funded UT Medical Students Teaching in Aging Research Program (MSTAR), influencing several medical students to pursue a Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine related career. Dr. Sanchez-Reilly has mentored many learners to become faculty members and has been influential in expanding Palliative Care clinical services locally. Moreover, Dr. Sanchez-Reilly leads the Palliative Care Programs at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS), and serves as the associate director for education and evaluation for the San Antonio VA Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). |

| The Medical Student Teaching in Aging Research Program (MSTAR) is funded by the National Institute of Aging to facilitate aging research among medical students at early stages of their career at a national level. To develop a peer mentoring program for faculty members interested in Palliative Medicine focusing on the improvement of teaching skills and academic productivity. |

| Grant Detail | The GeriSAFE will develop, implement, and evaluate an educational intervention for undergraduate and graduate medical and nursing learners. The GeriSAFE Project is an inter-professional multilevel educational intervention that aims to promote and improve safety among elders by training future generations of health care providers. The Geri-SAFE Project will be based on the older patient-tailored ACOVE quality indicators, particularly focusing on falls and mobility problems. The Geri-SAFE Project will teach principles of Geriatric fall detection, assessment and management. The GeriSAFE curriculum will be taught and evaluated by using interactive multimedia didactic modules, case videos, an inter-professional case-based small group activity and a standardized clinical encounter. |
