After completing medical school training and residency at UTHSCSA, I joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Medicine. I have always split my time between patient care and teaching although the location and roles have changed over the years. For the first five years I had a faculty practice at the MARC where my patient panel grew to around 600 patients. I would also work at the Robert B. Green clinic one half day per week seeing patients and teaching third year medical students. During this time I was also the Course Director for the Clinical Assessment of the Patient (CAP) Course and the entire On Becoming a Doctor (OBD) Course. In 2012 I transitioned from the MARC to seeing patients at the Robert B. Green clinic four half days per week. At the Robert B. Green clinic I care for patients alongside third year medical students. I have transitioned from working with primarily first-year medical students to mostly third-year medical students. I am now the Co-clerkship Director of the internal medicine clerkship.
During my time on faculty I have also been active in clinical research and innovations in medical education. I was previously a co-investigator in the ABC Intervention Study. This NIH funded study worked with practice facilitators in small primary care clinics to improve A1c control, blood pressure, and cholesterol in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. As Co-Clerkship Director I have made several innovations such as developing an online ambulatory curriculum, weekly academic half day sessions, and new techniques for OSCE note review. I counsel students to improve their academic performance and guide them through the decision-making process for career choice and preparation for residency.
