Dr. Fry is board-certified in ophthalmology and specializes in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery and ophthalmic oncology. Her areas of strength are in teaching and service. She teaches medical students, residents and fellows in ophthalmology, ophthalmic plastic surgery and oncology. She teaches nationally at an annual review course and by writing and editing content for on-line educational modules for maintenance of certification. She serves South Texas by being one of just a few oculoplastic surgeons in the area and the only fellowship-trained ocular oncologist treating intraocular cancer patients with a variety of modalities. She performs advanced treatments such as brachytherapy and biopsies for gene analysis for intraocular tumors. She also treats both children and adults with severe facial injuries and lacrimal, eyelid and socket disorders. Dr. Fry works as part of a multispecialty team coordinating care with oncology, radiation oncology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology and plastic surgery. Dr. Fry`s referral network includes 55 counties in South Texas. Dr. Fry`s research focuses on educating physicians on normative data in the Hispanic patient population and teaching surgeons innovative surgical techniques. |

Ophthalmic Oncology- Dr. Fry participates as an invited committee member to develop educational content for a series of on-line learning modules in ophthalmic oncology/pathology/ophthalmic plastic surgery for an international audience. The course content serves to assist practicing ophthalmologists maintain board certification. |
Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery- Dr. Fry is an expert in facial and orbital anatomy and the treatment of complex orbital malignancies, reconstructive surgery after trauma as well as eyelid and lacrimal surgery. This has led to Dr. Fry being an invited speaker/teacher at an international review course in ophthalmic plastic surgery for over 20 years, seven years of which she was course director and her teaching at a national orbital dissection course. This expertise resulted in Dr. Fry pursuing innovative research. She is the first to describe the features of the Latino Eyelid and associate it with genetic analysis. Her publication on this topic is the first to use principle component analysis of genetics in this area of study. |
Resident & Fellow Education- Dr. Fry served as the program director at UTHSCSA from 2007-2013 and is knowledgeable about the ACGME requirements for residency training programs. Since 2014, Dr. Fry has been the UTHSCSA site director for the fellowship in Oculofacial surgery. As each director, Dr. Fry provided both a teaching and service function to UTHSCSA by administering the educational process of new physicians. In 2017, Dr. Fry`s efforts were acknowledged by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and she was elevated to Associate Preceptor for the ASOPRS fellowship. This acknowledged her expanded role as of July 2016 when Dr. Fry assumed responsibility for directing the fellow`s thesis and expanding the multidisciplinary exposure of the fellow to include: Neuro-Ophthalmology, Neuroradiology, Neurosugery, Otolaryngology, Dermatology and Pathology. |

For 7 consecutive years, Dr. Fry has collaborated with colleagues at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) - the combined residency programs of Wilford Hall and Brooke Army Medical Center) to organize the month long lecture series, set curriculum, give 25-30% of the lectures, write test questions and vet the entire test for accuracy. Dr. Fry has been an instructor at this course continuously since 1994. An international review course, Dr. Fry began giving a two hour lecture and then a three hour lecture. By 2007, this was increased to 8 hours of lecture over two days and she became the Section head of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Since 2014, Dr. Fry has given 5-8 hours of lecture annually. This is one of three courses that are a month long given in the United States which serves to prepare practicing ophthalmologists, fellows and residents for taking the written qualifying exam of the American Board of Ophthalmology. The comprehensive nature of the review attracts both United States and international students. The course attendance ranges from 45-80 participants per year. |
