He was awarded Diplomate Status by the American Board of Dental Public Health, joining a distinguished group of only 146 other diplomats in the USA. Dr. Challa currently serves as Assistant Program Director for the residency in Dental Public Health at UTHSCSA-Dental School. He directs a course for third- year dental students promoting oral health. He also directs courses for first- and second-year dental students promoting oral health and disease prevention for individuals and populations. He has contributed to numerous public health activities including starting school-based oral health prevention programs in Laredo, TX. He is also involved with the Head Start Program in San Antonio, TX which delivers preventive care to more than 8,000 at-risk children per year. Dr. Challa is also involved with two research grant projects funded by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). One of these seeks to maintain and improve a comprehensive pre-doctoral Dental Public Health curriculum. His recent pilot grant to explore early life exposure to environmental pollutants in childhood obesity has yielded sound preliminary data that would contribute to generation of a major NIH-project centered on genetic epidemiology and translational research related to childhood obesity and its related diseases.
