When I arrived at UTHSCSA in 2007, I started the first and only video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lung lobectomy program in South Texas. This has resulted in a doubling of the number of lung lobectomy cases our residents are exposed to, making it much easier for them to obtain adequate numbers for this index operation. Prior to my arrival, these numbers barely met the residency training requirements ? if at all. As a result of these efforts, my department chairman, Dr. John Calhoon, appointed me Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery. I have also led the effort to track quality metrics for our lung lobectomy cases through multiple quality assurance databases, and have submitted numerous abstracts attesting to the same. Our outcomes are now some of the best in the state of Texas and unquestionably the best in San Antonio. Partnering with community physicians, I was one of the key clinical leaders in creating the South Texas Lung Institute, a multi-disciplinary collaboration with St. Luke?s Baptist hospital focused on the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer which has significantly increased patient referrals from physicians in the community to the UTHSCSA, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, as well as other clinical services. This included starting the first lung cancer screening program in South Texas and the first multidisciplinary tumor board for thoracic malignancies in the private community, resulting in significant partnering between UTHSCSA, the CTRC, and community physicians. During this time, I have also been one of only two surgeons in South Texas performing lung transplantation, covering call essentially 50% of the time (to include nights, weekends, and Holidays) to support the program. Before my arrival, the UTHSCSA lung transplant program performed only 20-25 lung transplants per year; currently our program has grown to consistently perform 35-40 transplants per year with the highest patient and graft survival rates in Texas and the shortest waiting time in the nation. I have been invited as a visiting professor/guest speaker on numerous occasions (UT Southwestern, Dallas, TX; Nashville and Knoxville, TN; Baptist Cancer Update Conference, San Antonio, TX; J. Bradley Aust Surgical Society, San Antonio, TX; Koppa pulmonary medicine conference, Hunt, TX) to speak on topics including lung cancer screening, multidisciplinary lung cancer care, and lung transplantation.
