First and foremost I am very thankful to all of those who have provided me with personal support and professional mentorship through my life, and I am eternally thankful to those who have sacrificed for the liberty that I and my family now enjoy. I joined the U.S. Navy while in High School and began my undergraduate work while still on active duty. I was accepted into the United States Air Force medical school scholarship program, and attended medical school with their support. I then served for 12 years in the U.S. Air Force as a surgical intern, an anesthesia Resident, a critical care fellow, and finally as anesthesia and critical care faculty. In all, I spent 20 years in the military, and had the honor to serve our nation at home and abroad, in war and in peace. I have been blessed with a lovely wife, Amy, and two wonderful daughters, Ashley and Lauren. My current personal interests include woodworking, home renovation, hiking, photography, and marksmanship. My main professional interests include teaching, lecturing, and participating in clinical work. In particular, I enjoy trying to make seemingly complex concepts simple to understand for trainees, emphasizing graphics to convey information in lectures, and incorporating basic physics, physiology and historical reference into my didactic discussions. In the clinical arena, I enjoy participating in complex cardiovascular cases. I also have an interest in employing checklists in medicine, and I have recently authored a book chapter detailing the use of aviation like checklists in the checkout of the anesthesia workstation.
