The focus of my career has been on the pursuit of excellence in research and service activities towards the advancement of our understanding of impulsive, aggressive, and suicidal behaviors.

Throughout my career I have sought out opportunities to advance science of individuals who engage in behaviors that are harmful to themselves and those around them. Impulsivity is a transdiagnostic behavior common to a broad range of behavioral health difficulties. My research focuses on discovery of the biological, behavioral and personality mechanism involved in the initiation and maintenance of these harmful behaviors among youth. The purpose of this work is to identify targets for treatments designed to reduce impulsive, aggressive, and suicidal behaviors.

I have engaged in a variety of service activities supporting development of others in areas of research and mentorship. I am administrative director of two 1115 Waiver projects (MATTERS; DHHS 085144601.2.6 and DHHS 085144601.2.101). I have Hosted 2 undergraduate students from Brazil through a competitive training grant application program (the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cintifico e Tecnolgico program) from the Brazilian Federal Government. I was also fortunate enough to serve as faculty co-mentor for T32 Postdoctoral Scholars: Jillian Mullen Ph.D. now appointed as the Principal Advisor of Alcohol and Drugs Programmes and Interventions for the New Zealand Department of Corrections (Federal); and Nora Charles Ph.D. now appointed as Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Clinical Psychology the University of Southern Mississippi. This mentorship extends to high school students in the Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy. I also am fortunate enough to provide expertise in ethical consideration through service as Chair of the UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry Data Safety and Monitoring Board, as well as, serving as a member of the DSMB''s for the STRONG STAR and Consortium to Alleviate PTSD (CAP). For the past 2 year, I have chaired the UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds Committee. My expertise in planning scientific meetings has been applied to the Organizing Committee for annual meetings of the International Society for Research on Impulsivity in Cambridge UK, Toronto (chair), Amsterdam, Atlanta, and San Diego.
