The focus of my career has been on the pursuit of excellence in research and service activities towards the advancement of our understanding of impulsive, aggressive, addictive, and suicidal behaviors.

Throughout my career I have sought out opportunities to advance science of individuals who engage in behaviors that are harmful to themselves and those around them. Impulsive, aggressive, addictive, and suicidal behaviors are a transdiagnostic behavior common to a broad range of behavioral health difficulties and commonly comorbid with one another. My research focuses on discovery of the biological, behavioral and personality mechanism involved in the initiation and maintenance of these harmful behaviors.

I have engaged in a variety of service activities supporting development of others in areas of research and mentorship. I am administrative director of our treatment program for adults recently arrested for driving while intoxicated offenses. This work developed as a results of my community engagement activities with Bexar County and our local alcohol monitoring infrastructure for adults with mental illness who become criminal justice involved. The focus of this work spans from efficacy studies of alcohol interventions for DWI to implementation for delivery in the pretrial settings.

I am fortunate enough to provide expertise in ethical consideration through service as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry Data Safety and Monitoring Board, as well as, serving as a member of the DSMB's for the STRONG STAR and Consortium to Alleviate PTSD (CAP).
My services contributes to the educational mission of UT Health San Antonio through direct mentorship of students ranging from High Schoolers in the Voelcker Biomedical Academy, to our T32 postdoctoral fellows. More broadly, these educational activities extend to acting as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds Committee. My expertise in planning scientific meetings has been applied to the Organizing Committee for annual meetings of the International Society for Research on Impulsivity in Cambridge UK, Toronto (chair), Amsterdam, Atlanta, and San Diego.
