This National Cancer Institute-funded project will stimulate research and training collaborative partnerships between UT Pan American and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to increase the cancer research base on the U.S.-Mexico border, particularly in assessing decision-making among Latinas regarding knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about breast cancer genetic testing. Project investigators will: participate in pilot projects to train researchers at UT Pan American (a minority-serving institution) in translational and basic science research and the use of qualitative research techniques; determine the behavioral and socioeconomic barriers that affect cancer outcomes in Hispanics; and increase the number of cancer researchers in Texas. Using the vast information collected in this project, investigators also will develop and pre-test a survey to assess factors associated with breast cancer genetic testing. |

This project, funded by a supplement through Dr. Amelie Ramirez Redes En Accin program, would use patient navigation to increase recruitment of children from the Texas-Mexico border region called the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) into hematology/oncology clinical trials. Dr. Langevin, who heads the South Texas Pediatric Minority-Based Community Clinical Oncology Program (STP-MB-CCOP), will work with Drs. Ramirez and Velez to stimulate collaboration among partner STP-MB-CCOP institutions to recruit and train a patient navigator/clinical research associate (PN/CRA) to boost clinical trial enrollment and patient satisfaction, specifically designed for the needs of LRGV pediatric hematology/oncology patients. |

This project, funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, hypothesizes that culturally appropriate methods and comprehensive approaches are necessary to increase the participation of Latinos in clinical trials. The experiment combines a patient-based intervention to reduce barriers to clinical trial participation and a provider-based intervention to reduce barriers for trial referrals. The study will test the effect of patient and provider strategies when used alone and together on the patients decision making process as follows: 1) a patient-based strategy, using tailored print and computerized resources and peer/family support, to increase awareness, reduce attitudinal barriers, and educate patients to help them develop decision-making skills to participate in breast cancer clinical trials; 2) a provider-based strategy, using training, automated online access to trial information, and automated matching of breast cancer patients with available trials, to reduce barriers for referring Latinas to breast cancer
clinical trials; and 3) combined patient- and provider-based strategies on recruitment and retention of Latinas into breast cancer clinical trials. |
