| Grant Detail | The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) proposes to reduce the critical shortage of personnel certified to work in early intervention, classroom, and/or itinerant educational settings with infants, toddlers, and children who have mild-profound hearing loss (i.e. d/hh) by preparing 36 new teachers over a four-year period. The 36-hour Masters Degree in Deaf Education and Hearing Science (MDEHS) Program is the only listening and spoken language (auditory-oral) emphasis teacher preparation program in Texas. UTHSCSA is located in a suburban setting and prepares teachers who work in a variety (e.g. rural, urban, suburban) of geographical settings. Faculty at UTHSCSA will use research-based reciprocal peer coaching and mentoring techniques to develop teaching skills in listening and spoken language; reciprocal peer coaching and mentoring will continue throughout the initial year of professional practice in an effort to reduce new-teacher attrition. Key collaborators and supporters include Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children, The Center for Hearing and Speech, Regional Education Centers, Hands and Voices, and The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. The average percent of total annual funding designated for student support is 69%. |
