Dana English is an Educational Development Specialist within the Virtual Innovative Teaching and Learning (VITaL) department. In 1980, she received a Dental Hygiene Certificate from UT Health Science Center San Antonio. In 2002, while still in a successful clinical career in private practice she returned to school to complete her BS in Dental Hygiene from East Tennessee State University. In 2009 she completed her MS in Dental Hygiene from UT Health Science Center San Antonio. She is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership with a Specialization in Educational Technology with a projected graduation date of 2016.
From 2008 2014 Dana served as a faculty member in the department of Periodontics, Division of Dental Hygiene as an Assistant Professor. Her teaching responsibilities included course directorships for undergraduate, BS completion, and graduate courses in Dental Materials, Professional Issues, Current Issues and Geriatrics in addition to serving clinical dental hygiene faculty. Additionally she served as thesis advisor on numerous committees and was a core member of the RESPECT team, an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, dentists and dental hygienists treating patients in an inner-city health clinic, as well as serving as the dental care director of the SAMMS Transitional Living & Learning Center (TLLC) in 2012-2014.
In addition to teaching, Dana was an awarded a geriatric grant to create educational programs for dental hygienist wanting to enter into geriatrics. This included contributing education programs has as well as graduate programs. Dana has been guest speaker at numerous conferences and planning committees concentrating on Geriatrics: the Respiratory Therapy River Walk Symposium; the UT Health Science Center Aging Conference in Laredo, TX; and the Summer Institute in Aging Conference in San Antonio, TX. In 2014, Dana turned her focus from dental hygiene to faculty development where she has been a keynote speaker for several national conferences presenting on the "Flipped Classroom" and recently in 2016, peer instruction. Dana has also been an invited speaker for the TBUG conference held annually. As a member of the VITaL team, Dana has been the keynote speaker for the Flipped Classroom Workshop Series held university wide and recently on peer teaching and instruction.
