Nguyen, Patrick

School of Medicine

Since joining UTHSCSA in July 2009 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery I have immersed myself in my role as a general surgeon, educator, researcher and administrator. I was assigned to the first expansion of the UT Medicine practice at Westover Hills as a general surgeon. Now in my sixth year in practice I have a busy clinical practice at Westover Hills that comprises a busy outpatient elective practice, an inpatient acute care practice that comprises of taking seven calls a month at the 2nd busiest Emergency Room in the City (CSR Westover Hills Hospital) with over 60,000 patient visits annually, I provide surgical endoscopy services to our primary care physicians at UT Medicine Westover Hills, responsible for all screening/diagnostic colonoscopies and upper endoscopies for our satellite campus, and I am also the back up surgeon for our UT Weight Loss Institute providing coverage on nights/weekends and when Dr. Richard Peterson our Bariatric Surgeon is out of town. I also provide first assistant services to Dr. Peterson for a number of his complex cases.

From the educational standpoint upon my hiring I immediately took an active role in the surgical education of medical students, interns, and residents in the Department of Surgery. Initially I served as an instructor for a number of didactic sessions for the Surgery Clerkship lecture series as well as for the residency program. I played an active role in the administrative functions of the medical student clerkship when the Director, Dr. Robert Esterl moved to the Dean`s office in an interim position for several years. Subsequently was promoted to Co-Director of the surgery clerkship and in the 2014 2015 Academic Year was promoted to Director of the Surgery Clerkship. This occurred concurrently with a clinical practice that showed year over year increase in RVU`s and collections.

From the administrative standpoint beyond my involvement with the surgery clerkship early on I played an active role in the Committee Structures of both UTHSCSA as well as Christus Santa Rosa Health System. Early on in my career I became involved in the Interview Committee of the Medical School Admissions Committee, as well as the Student Health Advisory Committee in which I ultimately Chaired for a term. From the Hospital Administrative aspect, I am currently serving as President of the Christus Santa Rosa Westover Hills Co-Management Partnership, Physician Liaison of the Physician Computerized Order Entry Work Group, Chief of Surgical Services (serving my 2nd term), and Member of the Peer Review Committee at Westover Hills.

I am also actively involved in surgical education research, having submitted abstracts to the annual Surgical Education Week with success in having abstracts accepted in the poster format the majority of the years that I have been in practice.
