Gemma Kennedy, PhD, RN is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Health Systems at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and serves as Research faculty and the Director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. Dr. Kennedy has also held a faculty position in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, were she served as Director of Clinical Research. In this position Dr. Kennedy worked with research teams made up of Cardiology Fellows, research personnel and other disciplines at the Health Science Center. Research studies included FDA Phase 1 to Phase 4 studies, and noninvasive and invasive cardiovascular studies. She instructed both medical and nursing students as part of their Cardiology education. She operated a clinic for patients with end-stage cardiovascular disease. Between faculty appointments Dr. Kennedy worked in the Biomedical sector developing medical products. In this position Dr. Kennedy did product development using prototype modeling approaches meeting FDA drug and device standards and writing over 40 National Institute of Medicine Small Business Research Grants (SBIR) that included approaches to developing products using bench, animal and clinical studies and working with multidisciplinary teams. Study interests included reduction of biofilms, skin protectants, skin barrier products, topical drug delivery, and chaos theory based approaches to manage patient care. Dr. Kennedy`s other areas of research interest are congestive heart failure, cardiovascular disease and critical care. Dr. Kennedy has worked in research for over 30 years and has contributed to medical and nursing knowledge at the national level.
