I grew up in a small town (pop. <300) in central Illinois, and attended public schools for my entire education. I have always been interested in science, particularly biology and chemistry. While attending the University of Illinois with aspirations of becoming a small animal veterinarian, I worked part time at both a vet clinic and in the laboratory of the late Dr. David Baker, who was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences a few years before his passing. During this time, my interests gravitated to the research lab. I developed a passion for designing experiments to test hypotheses, collection and analysis of new data and trying to understand how the new data fit within the bigger picture. The rest (so far) is history. I met and married my wife the semester before starting graduate school, and we started our family. I now split my passion between my research and my family. I still love coming to work each day to train young scientists while we explore our scientific interests. However, I also love watching my kids excel in school and compete in athletics. We have grown to truly feel like San Antonio is home. I am realizing my professional goal of conducting bonafide translational research that touches both preclinical and clinical domains.
