School of Medicine
Family & Community Medicine

As the Senior Director, Medical Information for UT Medicine I provide clinical leadership for the ongoing development, advancement and optimization of the EpicCare ambulatory electronic health record and related technologies in furthering the clinical and research missions of UTHSCSA.

I joined the faculty of UTHSCSA on March 15, 2012 after serving for more than 21 years on the faculty of the McLennan County Medical Education and Research Foundation (MCMERF) Family Medicine Residency Program in Waco, Texas.

From 1999-2012 I served as the Chief Medical Officer of Heart of Texas Community Health Center (HOTCHC), a section 330 federally-qualified health center serving low income residents of McLennan county. While at MCMERF/HOTCHC I led development of the organization?s EpicCare Ambulatory electronic health record (EHR), beginning with the initial implementation of EpicCare in 1997, and was the project director on multiple EHR-related grants. I have a special interest in optimizing EHR features and workflows and using EHR reporting systems to support medical education, clinical quality improvement, and practice efficiency. Under my leadership HOTCHC received one of two national Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Community Health Organization Nicholas E. Davies Awards presented in 2009 for effective EHR implementation with measureable improvement in patient outcomes.

I am originally from Junction, TX, and did my undergraduate premedical studies at Schreiner College and UTSA. I received my MD from UTHSCSA in 1984 and completed my family medicine residency in Abilene, TX in 1987. I practiced in Winnsboro, TX from 1987-1990 before moving to Waco.
