The central focus of my professional career has been to improve health among American Indian and diverse populations by promoting the provision of culturally congruent care to these populations through education, nursing practice and research. Leadership roles have been held in three professional organizations: Navajoland Nurses United for Research, Service and Education (N-Nurse), National Alaska Native American Indian Nursing Association (NANAINA) and Pathways into Health. Having extensive experience in developing culturally relevant programs, activities which incorporated this experience occurred through coordinating the American Indian Program at Northern Arizona University for eleven years as well as having served on advisory boards for OSU-Okmulgee Nursing Department and University of New Mexico, Gallup Nursing Program. Also, dedicated efforts to fostering student achievement by facilitating mentoring programs are ongoing. Moreover, extensive work to develop nursing curriculum that incorporates diverse world views that enhances the success of diverse students in developing nursing practice competencies has been recognized at national and international levels. The American Nurses Association Alumni Minority Fellowship Award, the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, and the Alaska Elders for Excellence in Cultural attunement and lifelong learning have recognized these accomplishments as a leader in American Indian Nursing Education. Leadership efforts resulted in significant community partnership projects being funded and implemented. Currently, courses taught include Population Focused Health which includes collaborating with the American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions and Healthcare Policy Analysis and Advocacy.
