Dr. Dire is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He has been board-certified in Emergency Medicine since 1988 and Pediatric Emergency Medicine since 1994. He provides consultation services to the editorial boards of several medical journals and has been author or co-author of numerous medical articles, abstracts and book chapters. His area of special interest is disaster medicine, particularly terrorist bombings and bioterrorism. Dr. Dire is a Major General in the United States Army Reserve with over 38 years of military service during which he has been assigned as the Commanding Officer of several Army Hospitals, two Medical Groups, one Medical Brigade, and the Army`s largest deployable Medical Command. He has completed multiple overseas deployments including to Bosnia-Herzogovina, South Korea, Kosovo, Kuwait, and multiple Central America countries and he is an Army Flight Surgeon.
Dr. Dire`s military awards include the Legion of Merit with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M3 device and Silver Hourglass, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon (three awards), the NATO Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Flight Surgeon Badge, the Basic Parachute Badge, and the Army Superior Unit Award with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. He was awarded the Army Surgeon General`s A Designator for excellence in Emergency Medicine and has been inducted into the Order of Military Medical Merit. He was awarded the 2015 Excellence in Military Emergency Medicine Award by the Government Services Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Dire is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
