C. J. Winckler, MD, LP is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services. He serves as the Deputy Medical Director for the San Antonio Fire Department and is an assistant clinical professor in both the University of Texas San Antonio Emergency Health Sciences Department and the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Winckler provides daily clinical supervision, via online medical direction, direct medical direction and performance improvement processes to over 1700 SAFD providers, including over 500 paramedics. He has an EMS response vehicle allowing him to provide curbside teaching directly to San Antonio?s first responders, in the same manner that resident physicians are trained in teaching hospitals. In addition to providing regular daily EMS medical supervision, Dr. Winckler?s clinical oversight duties include the highly specialized medical special operations unit (MSOU) and law enforcement navigation of emergency detention patients in San Antonio. Dr. Winckler is currently involved in research and performance improvement projects including; continuing education to promote safe sleep environments for infants, evaluating the safety of immobilizing patients on backboards, correct patient transport positioning for EMS trauma patients to maximize respiratory function, low titer O+ whole blood use in prehospital trauma patients, developing and implementing comprehensive resuscitation centers including a plan to offer cardiac arrest patients extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and taking these patients directly to the heart catheter laboratory for immediate coronary reperfusion. Dr. Winckler has a true passion for patient care in the prehospital environment.
