Dr. Voelker first came to UT Health San Antonio in Fall 2017 as a part-time Simulation Specialist in the Center for Simulation and Innovation (CSI). During that first year, he instructed in the Skills Lab for Foundations of Clinical Nursing. Seeking to make a bigger impact in the field of nursing and future nurse leaders, Dr. Voelker joined the faculty team full-time as an Assistant Professor/ Clinical in the Fall of 2018. So Far, he has drawn on his extensive background in nursing clinical and management roles to guide and mentor students in Leadership & Management, Adult II, Accelerated Med/Surg and Transition to Nursing Practice (Immersion) Clinicals. Immediately prior to switching roles into full-time academia, Dr Voelker was a staff nurse in a 10-bed Trauma/Surgery Intensive Care Unit at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), one of the city?s Level 1 Trauma Centers. In that role, he cared for complex poly-trauma, neurosurgical, general surgery, cardio-thoracic and orthopedic surgery patients. Dr Voelker initially obtained his BSN in 1984 and was selected for a commission in the US Army Nurse Corps. During his 20 years of service, he filled various clinical and administrative roles including staff nurse, charge nurse, nurse manager, and house supervisor. Dr. Voelker received his Master of Nursing (Critical Care) from the University of Washington in 1992. In order to pursue social justice issues, He earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from St. Mary?s University in 2008 and passed the Texas Bar in 2009. He looks forward to training the next generation of nurse leaders!
