Dr. Cervando Martinez is Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. A native of Texas, he is bilingual, trained at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and received psychiatric training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He also served in the US Navy for 2 years prior to joining the faculty. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and is Board Certified in Psychiatry since 1976.

He has an interest in the treatment of chronic and severe mental disorders in the community. He also has competence in geriatric psychiatry and psychotherapy. He is director of mental health services for the HIV/AIDS service of University Hospital System. From 2010 to 2018 he was director of the psychiatric practice based research network(PBRN),a part of the Clinical Translational Science Award(CTSA) of UTHSCSA.The CTSA is an NIH supported multiproject program.

His teaching activities include teaching psychiatry to medical students, psychiatry residents, family medicine residents, and advanced nurse practitioner students. He has medical school/medical education administrative experience, having served for 10 years as Associate Dean for Affiliated Programs and CME. In this capacity he was part of the team that developed the Regional Academic Health Center of UTHSCSA,which eventually became the regional medical school. He has served on numerous community boards and committes.
