Educational Research- Taught UTHSCSA Educational Research Methods Course with Dr. M. Agnes Manwell-Jackson, PhD from ACET in Spring 2007. Gave workshop at PAS on "Getting Started in Pediatric Educational Research" in 2007, 2010. Ongoing educational research projects include Performance Assessment of the Newborn History and Physical Examination by Medical Students and Residents (development of direct observation checklist, validation, teaching intervention). |
Educational Scholarship- I actively engage in educational scholarship. I have received additional training in this area as part of the Educational Scholars Program of the Academic Pediatric Association. I am invited regularly to give workshops on educational scholarship at Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics and at the Pediatric Academic Societies international meetings. I mentor faculty in scholarly activities both here at UTHSCSA and at other academic institutions. |
Educational Technology- On line teaching and learning, information technology, use of high fidelity human simulators. Blended learning utilized in resident and student teaching. Have given workshops on this. Also, monthly sessions with residents in NICU utilizing high fidelity infant simulator. |
Mentoring- I developed and ran the Pediatric resident Mentoring Program. I have mentored several residents and students in the lab. I have given several workshops on Peer mentoring. I participate in peer mentoring with our group of Clerkship Directors. I mentor locally and nationally for the Educational Scholars Program of the Academic Pediatric Association. I mentor junior faculty, fellows and residents in educational projects locally. I advise and mentor a number of students interested in pediatrics yearly. |
Necrotizing enterocolitis- Incidence and prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis. |
Palliative Care- Program building, QI and education. Interdisciplinary group working on educational staff in the NICU. Implementing interdisciplinary teaching to enhance communication skills, family-centered care, relief of pain, suffering and self-care in an intense environment. I have been board certified by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. |
Team Based Learning- I utilize the team based learning techniques in teaching 3rd year medical students on the Pediatric Clerkship. We have 4 didactic sessions in each 6 week group that are taught in this manner ( 4 sessions, 8 times per year). I am also in a program with the team Based Learning Cooperative that will result in my certification in TBL instruction. |
Date | Description | Institution | # Students |
9/2012 - Present | Individual Instruction | UTHSCSA
7/2011 - Present | Pediatrics Clerkship | The University of Texas Health Science Center | 200 students |
Course Director - We have 8 blocks of students each year. Responsible for designing, delivering and revising many teaching sessions each block; orient each group of students for at least 3 hours per block going over policies, expectations, course management, etc. I teach 2 Team- Based Learning Large group Sessions; prepare and deliver our afternoon on humanism/ethics; and facilitate an afternoon of student presentations in ethics/humanism. In addition, I design, grade and monitor online learning activities of all students.
1/2009 - Present | Neonatal Thematic Journal Update | UTHSCSA | 16 students |
Monthly journal review for neonatal faculty and fellows. This is different than journal club as it begins with a clinical question, the leader of the session identifies and circulates key literature to address the question and all faculty and fellows review one of the articles and present the key findings. The leader then leads the group in a discussion to answer the question and potentially change practice. This is a monthly session and I lead the discussion once per year, participate in other sessions.
1/2003 - Present | Neonatal Research | The University of Texas Health Science Center
Course Director - Arrange for interested students to get involved in division research projects. Help supervise any of the students who come to the lab.
6/2002 - Present | Neonatal ICU Externship | The University of Texas Health Science Center
Course Director - Arrange for interested fourth year medical students to rotate at UHS NICU. Help arrange their schedule. When on service, provide educational direction. Frequently write letters of recommendation for these students.
1/2002 - Present | Individual Instruction | UTHSCSA
1/2002 - Present | Neonatal Fellow Morning Report | UHS | 5 students |
Weekly forum where Fellow presents NICU patients to colleagues and faculty, providing the basis for in-depth discussion and critical evaluation of all aspects of disease processes and clinical care. Role: Faculty.
7/2000 - Present | Neonatal Fellow Lecture Series | UTHSCSA | 9 students |
Annual state-of-the-art lecture to Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellows and faculty from UTHSCSA and San Antonio Military Medical Center. Each talk requires 20-30 hours of preparation time. Some of the topics that I have presented in the past include; Lung Morphology and Development in the Fetus, Renal Anatomical Development as a Primer for Molecular Medicine, Fetal and Neonatal Renal Physiology, Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy, Blood Use in the NICU- then subtopic presentations on different blood products.
7/2000 - Present | Neonatology Journal Club | UTHSCSA | 20 students |
Monthly Journal Club with Neonatal faculty and fellows from UTHSCSA and SAMMC. I participate by mentoring fellows approximately once per year and by attending and giving input in monthly sessions.
3/2000 - Present | Monthly Lectures to Residents and Students in the NICU | UHS | 15 students |
Give formal didactic lecture in the NICU at least once a month on a variety of neonatal topics. Every resident on both NICU and NBN rotations participates. Over the years, these sessions have become more interactive. For the past 4 years, I have abandoned lectures entirely and my "didactic" time consists of high fidelity neonatal resuscitation with residents in groups of 3. We develop resident skills in assembling equipment needed for resuscitation, skill development for bag mask ventilation, intubation, use of meconium aspirator, chest compressions, decision-making and team work. These sessions are highly praised by the residents and we have seen a great improvement in skill retention when residents have neonatal resuscitation recertification at the end of their second year of residency. Average hands on teaching time 4 hours per month.
1/2000 - Present | Post-Doctoral Student Supervision | UTHSCSA
6/1999 - Present | Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Course for Incoming Interns | UTHSCSA | 40 students |
Annually, teach various aspects of NRP to incoming Pediatrics, Family Practice and OB/Gyn residents. Hands on simulations of common neonatal resuscitation emergencies. We both teach and evaluate skills of participants.
6/1999 - Present | Neonatal Resuscitation Recertification Course for Residents | UTHSCSA | 15 students |
At the end of their 2nd year, Pediatric Residents are recertified in NRP. I teach many different sections of the course. Recnet years, we spend most of our time in simulations to both teach and evaluate participant skills, decision-making, and team work.
3/1999 - Present | Post Graduate Rotation Supervision | UTHSCSA-UHS
