Clinical Studies- A growing interest in outcomes oriented research has led to participation at the investigator level in a number of national, multi-center cooperative trials mostly through the Veterans Administration. Of particular note is my role in the BARI-2D trial, a 51-center international study of optimal treatment for diabetics with coronary artery disease. As chairman of the surgery working group, I help to oversee data collection and sub-studies in the surgical arm of the study. |
Lung Transplantation- Upon my arrival at the Health Science Center, I engaged in a collaborative effort with Dr. Charles Bryan of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine to study lung ischemia/reperfusion injury in animal models as a means of improving lung preservation for transplantation. With an increasing clinical load and Dr. Bryan`s departure, these activities have been curtailed, but clinical studies in our very active lung transplant program continue. |
Mitral Valve Surgery- For the past 20 years, I have been the primary surgeon in a mitral valve repair program that now includes over 400 patients. Of particular interest is an ongoing study of mitral valve annuloplasty as a means of palliating patients with congestive heart failure. This has led to several invited lectures, including as faculty member of the Cardiac Surgery Postgraduate Course at the most recent Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons. |
Surgical Education- An evolving interest in surgical education led to a fellowship in Surgical Education Research through the Association for Surgical Education. Several projects resulted from this including a study of prevalence of student "audition" rotations in selected surgical residencies. |
