I am a General Dentist with specialty training in Geriatrics, Medically Compromised patients, and Hospital Dentistry. I received a Master of Public Health degree from University of Texas HSC-Houston in 2010. My main focus at the University of Texas Health San Antonio, School of Dentistry is teaching and service. I am involved in multiple teaching activities supporting undergraduate and graduate programs. In my current position as an Associate Professor with Tenure and Assistant Group Leader, my main responsibility is clinical instructor to Junior and Senior dental students. This involves clinical teaching supported by evidence-based dentistry and scholarly activity for the students such as literature searches, literature review and referencing books. I also provide administrative management to junior students, ensuring they complete their clinical course expectations in a timely manner. I teach and supervise the execution of dental procedures in all aspects of dentistry in patients. For senior dental students I teach immediate assessment, diagnosis, and presentation of the primary treatment plan as well treat the patient immediatly. I serve as a Director of the San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries Transicional Living Center SAMM TLC Dental clinic since 2016 with a collaboration with Dental Hygiene and Graduate Periodontics Department. Students called officers learn the administration of a community clinic, scheduling, ordering materials as well finding senior and juniors student volunteers to come to the clinic to treat the homeless population 4 times a month. Screening, Urgent care, Perio and pediatric night. Also Inter-professional program 2 Saturdays Fall semester at Coming back to school and Health fair. One Saturday Spring semester for Give kids A Smile "GKAS".
I also serve as faculty advisor for the American Student Dental Association "ASDA" since 2016 and student project mentor for pre-dental students from UTSA pre-doctoral dental students, Pedo-dental association and post-doctoral residents students. My direct student contact time in teaching and patient care is eight half-days per week. I served as a course director for Heroes for the Homeless from 2011. This course is offered to the incoming senior students as a summer selective. The course teaches cultural competency relative to oral health needs of the homeless population. I currently collaborate in a Research project since 2003-2018 and to date looking data to future publications with the Department of Periodontics looking at long term healing of dental implants in Diabetic patients both controlled and uncontrolled.
