I am a board certified, fellowship trained Neuroradiologist, currently working as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. My areas of special interest include Craniocervical Trauma, Epilepsy and Stroke Imaging. I perform minimally invasive, nonvascular procedures such as Spinal Myelograms and Lumbar punctures guided by fluoroscopy. I also perform Clinical Research. I certainly enjoy teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows on a daily basis, where our prompt imaging diagnosis makes a difference, changing the treatment and outcome of diverse Emergent Neurological and Neurosurgical conditions.

Epilepsy- The South Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, a partnership between University Health System and UT Medicine San Antonio, is the only Level 4 epilepsy center in San Antonio. We have been designated since 2005 and were reaffirmed in April of 2014 by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Level 4 is the highest designation for an epilepsy center, and is awarded to centers providing the most complex diagnostic and treatment options, including a broad range of surgical procedures. The University Hospital System?s Neurodiagnostic Center is now fully accredited by the American Board of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists, or ABRET. Only 131 labs worldwide have been awarded this distinction, and ours is the only one in San Antonio. I have been part of the University Hospital Epilepsy Board since 2013, where multiple neuroscience specialists -including but not limited to Neurology (Epilepsy, Neurophysiology), Neurosurgery, Neuropsychology and Neuroradiology-, meet every week to discuss complicated cases and define conducts, as well as patient prognosis. My role in this meeting is critical since I am the sole Radiology presenter, to explain and define all the imaging abnormalities in each of the evaluated cases, including interpretations of: CT?s, CT Angio?s, MRI?s, MR Angio?s, PET?s, SPECT?s and Functional Brain MRI?s. My presence on this group is key for clinical and surgical guidance of many complex imaging abnormalities. |
Head and Neck Trauma- Since I started working at the University Hospital, I have been giving annual internal lectures to different Emergency specialties - including Radiology Emergency Fellows, Radiology Residents, Emergency Medicine Residents, Medical Students and the Radiology Interest Group. I have been also invited as a Guest Lecturer outside our institution, in national and international meetings including: * Neuroradiology Review Course in Medellin Colombia, 05/2011. Sole Invited Speaker: 6 hours lecturing. * Videoteleconference to Adult surgical and critical care fellows, their faculty, and the surgical ICU house staff teams at SAMMC, VA and UT Houston, December 2012. 1.5 hour lecturing. *The Annual National Mexican Radiology Meeting in Puebla Mexico, 3/2013. 2 day meeting. 4 hours lecturing. * Invited Speaker of the AADEP (AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DISABILITY EVALUATING PHYSICIANS) Annual Meeting 2014, Sponsored by Biodynamic Research Corporation, San Antonio, TX. Two day course directed to multiple disciplines including orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, occupational medicine, physiatry, chiropractors, attorneys, adjusters, biomechanists, and accident reconstructionists. *Invited speaker to the Division of Pediatric Critical Care for a Neuroimaging Review. University Hospital 9th floor Horizon Tower Pediatric Congenital Cardiac Unit Conference Room. June/2015. 1.5 hour lecturing. *The upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Annual National Mexican Radiology Meeting in Puebla Mexico, 11/2016. 2 day meeting and interactive sessions with International Radiology residents and Technicians. 4 hours lecturing. 2 hours of ?hands on? sessions. Additionally I am a consultant for the private company Biodynamic Research Corporation (BRC), a professional services firm specializing in biomechanical analysis and accident reconstruction. BRC is located in San Antonio, Texas and serves clients throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. As a BRC expert I am designated and asked to provide expert analysis and testimony during litigation proceedings. Over the past 25+ years, in addition to numerous depositions, BRC?s experts have testified in more than 1000 trials. BRC has also conducted extensive internally funded research related to biomechanics and accident reconstruction. This research has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed technical journals. |
Stroke- Stroke is one of my special interest areas as well. I have been part of each of the University Hospital Stroke Committees as the sole Neuroradiology presenter, since the Primary Stroke Accreditation (2010-2014) as well as the current Comprehensive Stroke Certification Steering committee (2015). According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. Some 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. University Hospital is a Level II Stroke Center with a full stroke team on call 24/7 to care for patients with stroke symptoms immediately. Through our partnership with UT Medicine San Antonio, we are able to save lives and improve outcomes for stroke patients. University Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association?s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital?s commitment and success in providing excellent care for stroke patients by following evidence-based guidelines. Over 20% of patients receive tPA, a lifesaving medicine for stroke victims, which is significantly higher than the national average of 3-8% according to the American Heart Association. From the Neuroradiology perspective I am directly involved in the timely interpretation and communication of results from all kinds of Stroke Imaging modalities, such as Head CT?s, CT Angio?s head and Neck, MRI Brain, MR Angio?s head and Neck, and CT Perfusions. Our team meets or exceeds all national time standards for door to tPA, CT, lab, EKG and chest X-ray. I am a critical member of the dedicated stroke team which includes neurologists, nurses, radiologists, pharmacists, therapists (physical, occupational and speech), and an interventional neurological radiologist inside University Hospital 24/7. University Hospital was ranked BEST hospital in San Antonio 2014-2015 by U.S. News & World Report. After a stroke, patients continue to receive care at our Reeves Rehabilitation Center. A full stroke rehabilitation program helps stroke patients return to a more full life. Our excellence in Stroke teaching was recognized at the RSNA (RADIOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA) Annual Meeting on December 2014, to the Education Exhibit Certificate of Merit: "Where do you localize the lesion? The interface of clinical neurology and neuroradiology in classic ischemic stroke syndromes". |
