Cataract and Refractive Surgery- A relatively new subspecialty within ophthalmology which involves the surgical management of refractive errors in the human eye. Training is included in corneal and external disease fellowships and uses some of the most recent technological advances within the field. |
Cornea and External Disease- This subspecialty involves the diagnosis and management of diseases of the cornea, sclera, conjunctiva and eyelids, including dystrophies, infections, tumors, and ocular manifestations of systemic diseases. Training includes corneal transplant and refractive surgery. |
General and Comprehensive Ophthalmology- An ophthalmologist (Eye MD) specially trained to provide the full spectrum of eye care (medical and surgical management), from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to complex and delicate eye surgery. |
Graduate Medical Education (GME)- Medical education after graduating from a medical school in the specialty of ophthalmology for ophthalmology residents and for non-ophthalmology residents interested in ophthalmic training as it applies to their chosen specialty; i.e., family practice or internal medicine. |
Medical Education (ME)- Medical education in the surgical specialty of ophthalmology. Allopathic medical education is education related to the practice of being a medical practitioner; i.e., training to become a doctor. Allopathic refers to the practice of traditional or conventional Western medicine. |
Molecular and Human Genetics- The science concerned with the chemical and physical nature of genes and the mechanism by which they control the development and maintenance of the organism. Clinical genetics is the study of genetic factors influencing the occurrence of a pathologic condition. |
Patient Safety and Continuous Quality Improvement- PS is the prevention of errors and adverse effects associated with health care. CQI is a comprehensive management philosophy that applies scientific methods to gain knowledge and control over variation in work processes |

The lecture series is also attended by several UTHSCSA medical students rotating on the ophthalmology service. Each academic year I provide lectures on uveitis that have included the following topics: Masquerade Syndromes and Postoperative Endophthalmitis. I also provide test questions for each lecture that are administered in a uveitis test at the end of the month. | |||

An introduction to the eye room in the Emergency Department at University Hospital for all emergency medicine interns and residents in the first few weeks of the academic year to orient residents to approaching the emergency medicine patient with ophthalmic complaints. Introduction to the eye room and all the equipment with special emphasis on using the wall mounted and portable slit lamp and tonometers. Topics also covered included common emergent ophthalmic presentations (red eye, sudden visual loss, painful eye, and eye trauma) and interacting with the ophthalmology consultation service. This workshop was requested by Dr. Andrew E. Muck, the Associate Program Director for Emergency Medicine. | |||

The conference focuses on one to two subspecialties in ophthalmology and consists of featured keynote lectures and a series of oral abstract presentations based on original resident research- including clinical and basic science projects. After each abstract presentation, expert panelists discuss salient points. Conference is now held on a Saturday in April each academic year at the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. Course Director - The medical students at the UTHSCSA participate in a longitudinal clinical skills module held in the H-E-B Clinical Skills Center. In the fall, first year students all participate in the workshop ?The Eye Exam?, where students are broken up into small groups of 4-6 in two 90 minute sessions. The aspects of the 8 point clinical eye exam elements are covered with emphasis on direct ophthalmoscopy. I participated as clinical faculty preceptor for the 2008, 2009, and 2015 sessions and as lab director for the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 sessions. I coordinated this session along with the program coordinator Kristin Hilty and course director Kevin Schindler, MD. |
