Longitudinal Preceptorship involves the guidance of undergraduate medical students towards connecting their basic science knowledge to clinical judgement and management. A relationship is build upon several meetings to explore the attending`s decision to choose that specialty and develop the student`s future goals and aspirations. This program allows novice medical student to shadow faculty physicans during clinical encounters. Preceptors share their methods for assessing and communicating with patients and their techniques for documenting encounters.
My role also involves selecting appropriate patients for students to practice interviewing and performing physical exam skills on, as the student?s level of knowledge permits. Students receive formal instruction on how to take a full history and perform a complete physical exam during the first semester of medical school. Preceptors are kept apprised of the timeline over which students acquire various clinical skills throughout the year in order to guide what students should be able to practice in the real clinical setting. |
