UTHSCSA Faculty Profiles v1.0

I am very proud to be on faculty at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. It is professionally rewarding to teach our medical students and residents to be our future physicians and community leaders. I attain a great deal of satisfaction when I see the light come on in their eyes when they learn a new skill and acquire essential knowledge that they will use their entire career as a physician. Seeing them grow and improve inspires me to always continue learning and improving myself.
As an academic physician, I take great pride in providing mentorship to the future generation of physicians. I teach them that it is paramount to always place the patient first. To remember that our patients each have families that love them and that they have dreams that they wish to achieve themselves. I place myself in the shoes of the students and residents and make best efforts to teach them as I was taught. When I was a medical student and a resident, I was fortunate to have received excellent mentorship. I still maintain close relationships with several of my mentors and reach out for advice; just as I receive calls from several of our graduates for the same. Education truly flows both ways. I learn as much from our students and residents as they learn from the faculty.
I am very proud to be an anesthesiologist. People will always require surgery. We are here to guide them safely through their procedures and make sure that they do not feel or remember it. As an anesthesiology resident, I was fascinated with neurosurgical cases and decided to dedicate myself to subspecialty fellowship training in neuroanesthesia. After my fellowship, I was hired at UTHSCSA and quickly noticed that I had much to offer in terms of skill and expertise in managing these complex cases. Likewise, the Department of Neurosurgery quickly identified my expertise and honored me with an adjunct cross-appointment in their department. This is the greatest professional accolade that I have received.
To go a step further, I am proud to represent the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio when we go out to our community High Schools to teach them about the health professions that are available to them. That yes, they can achieve great heights if they apply themselves, have discipline, and self respect.
I am very proud to be on faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and I will continue to help advance the mission of our institution.

Thank you,
Luis Leopoldo Llamas, MD
