Title | A three-dimensional model of pterygopalatine fossa for anatomy education |
Status | Active |
Period | 1/2018 - 12/2018 |
Role | Principal Investigator |
Grant Detail | The pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) is a complicated anatomical space that can neither be visualized clearly during cadaveric dissections nor can its multiple communicating channels be conceptually appreciated in two-dimensional textbook figures. Knowledge of the PPF is important not only for dental and medical students but also for residents specializing in radiology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery and ENT. Previous attempts to build a negative space model of only the PPF resulted in incomplete display of the boundaries of the fossa. More importantly, such models do not directly reflect the passage of the neurovascular structures through the PPF. Therefore, we propose the development of a 3D model of a half skull for completely visualizing the PPF and evaluating its spatial relationship with its communicating channels. The 3D model will be accompanied by a pictorial instructional manual that describes relevant information regarding each structure in relation to its interaction with other structures. Outcomes will be evaluated by analyzing student performance on examinations pre- and post- model introduction and by a student satisfaction survey based on Likert scales. Successful outcomes will allow us to disseminate the 3D model to universities within and outside the UT system using MedEd Portal, thereby enhancing anatomy education and promoting information retention. |
