UTHSCSA Faculty Profiles v1.0

Bierle, Ryan Paul

School of Medicine
Emergency Medicine

In hindsight, my medical training began with a child/infant CPR course, completed so I could babysit the neighborhood kids and earn some spending money. It progressed to first aid and volunteer Search and Rescue during teenage years serving in Civil Air Patrol. What really set the hook was the first life saved while lifeguarding during college summers. This led to an EMT course and was immediately followed by Paramedic school. As I grew older, my young adult aversion towards the rigors of higher education waned, and I reentered university completing my prerequisites for graduate school. After graduating from PA school, I chose a career at an academic Level I Trauma center emergency department, and for the first two years I truly felt as if I were drinking from a firehose. I sought to validate the knowledge I had gained, and I was one of the early PAs to qualify for a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Emergency Medicine. As I progressed in EM, I sought to again challenge myself and became cross appointed as faculty with the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Once again, after I became comfortable with my knowledge, I again proved my competence by receiving an additional CAQ in Hospital Medicine. I have a passion for practicing medicine outside of conventional locations and I am devoted to educating all levels of practitioners of our craft. The medicine learned from studying the various aspects of operational medicine (wilderness, disaster, tactical, international, remote, etc.) are valuable in traditional medicine as well. My students report increased confidence in diagnosis and decision making, as well as improvisation and problem resolution due to their training. I am excited for future opportunities to hone my practice and transfer that knowledge to other medical practitioners!
