Endocrine & GI Cancer Predisposition Syndromes- I work very closely with the Genetic Counselors at the Mays Cancer Center and I am the lead surgeon to manage and to do surveillance on patients with endocrine and GI cancer predisposition syndromes, such as MEN 1 and 2, VHL, patients with SDH mutation carriers, and patients with Hereditary Gastric Cancer Synrome. I also collaborate with Dr. Patricia Dahia in tissue acquisition on patients with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. |
Endocrine Neoplasia- I manage patients with both benign and malignant neoplasia of the endocrine gland, including treatment of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pancreas neoplasia. I have performed HSR research on thyroid cancer. I have recently submitted a $900,000 grant to CPRIT as a co-PI to elucidate the impact of various genomic and tumor microenvironment on differentiated thyroid cancer. |
Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors- I have a particular clinical interest in the diagnosis, management, and surveillance of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. I currently have multiple patients under active surveillance with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors whom I am following prospectively. |
Gastrointestinal malignancies and neoplasms- My clinical and research interest and passion are in the area of management of gastrointestinal malignancies and neoplasms. I was hired by UT Health San Antonio in 2016 to re-build the GI surgical oncology program. Since my arrival, the Division of Surgical Oncology began treating a myriad of GI oncological conditions, including gastric cancer, small bowel tumors, gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, etc. I am the current chair of the GI Tumor Board at the Mays Cancer Center and I am the member of the GI Site Working Group for the Society of Surgical Oncology. I am the institutional PI for the multi-institutional prospective comparative study on the treatment of malignant bowel obstruction sponsored by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) Cancer Research Network. I have recently submitted a 1.5 million dollar grant as a PI through the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) program to identify molecular and microbial signatures predictive of gastric cancer development in high risk predominantly Hispanic population. The grant is currently under review. I am in the process of submitting a multi-institutional 3-million dollar grant through American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to study the molecular and microbial signatures predictive of development of gastric cancer in California and Texas, 2 states with the fastest growing incidence of gastric cancer. |

I have served as teaching faculty for 3rd year medical students rotating on the Surgical Oncology & Endocrine Surgery service as part of the surgery clerkship. The students participate actively in the diagnosis and management of patients with cancer and endocrine neoplasms. Teaching role involves bedside evaluation of patients during rounds, teaching during Surgical Oncology Grand Rounds, GI tumor board, in clinic, and teaching anatomy and technical skills in the operating room. I am in charge of medical student mid-rotation and end of rotation evaluations.
9/2016 - Present | Surgical Oncology | The University of Texas Health Science Center
This course allows senior students to gain understanding of the practice of surgical oncology from complex work up to patient management. The senior students serve as "interns" on the service. My role is to teach during rounds and supervise students in the assessment of patients in clinic. I allow students to evaluate patients on their own in clinic and I give them constructive feedback afterwards on their notes and oral presentations. I teach them technical skills in the operating room. |
